The Great American Beer Festival officially wrapped up Saturday in Denver. The yearly festival is one of the best in the industry and brings together brewers from around the country for a suds-filled weekend of drinking put on by The Brewers Association.

In its second year back after COVID, the Great American Beer Festival certainly felt a bit different on all fronts. As we noted from our day one recap, attendance to the fest felt significantly down compared to previous years and the competition portion saw a slight dip in entries as well, Regardless several breweries showed out in a big way at this year's

The 2023 Great American Beer Festival may not have garnered as much hype as previous years, but Colorado breweries made their most impressive showing in recent memory at the awards, which took place Saturday morning.

For the second consecutive year, the state of Colorado improved on its total medal count at the Great American Beer Festival and this year took a massive jump. This year, independent breweries from the Centennial State took home 40 medals, the most since 2017 and up from 26 the previous year. And for the second year in a row, a Colorado brewery took home top honors as one of the Brewery of the Year categories, that brewery being Wibby Brewing, which took home Brewery of the Year honors in the 5,001 - 15,000 Barrels per Year category.

Colorado brewers dominated this year's Great American Beer Festival competition, taking home a stunning 40 medals, including 14 golds.

A win at the Great American Beer Festival competition is a BIG deal. Taking a gold, silver or bronze medal in any one of this year's beer categories can put a new brewery on the map and reaffirm the brewing skills of industry leaders that sometimes get overlooked.

Local breweries crushed the competition with over three dozen total medals.

The Colorado Brewers Guild (CBG) is pleased to congratulate the 19 Colorado breweries, 18 of which who are craft breweries, that collected a total of 24 awards at the World Beer Cup award ceremony on May 10, 2023 in Nashville, TN where awards were given in 103 beer-style categories.

In the first year that the Brewers Association moved the 2023 World Beer Cup to a yearly event, Colorado breweries came out and had themselves a massive showing. Often referred to as the Olympics of Beer Competitions, the World Beer Cup features breweries from across the world vying for medals. This year's competition featured 10,213 entries from 2,376 breweries across 51 countries entered into 103 categories, and Colorado's contingent showed out in a MAJOR way taking home 24 medals from 19 breweries.

Before the coronavirus struck, visits to craft breweries were a part of millions of Americans' lifestyle. Business was booming then at numerous breweries, but many have now stopped or slowed production or are ramping up ways to increase take-home and package sales.

There is no way to truly know what the best Colorado-brewed beers were in 2019. There are simply too many breweries (over 420) and too many beers to try them all, let along rank them. So this is simply a list of thirty truly amazing beers that I tried during the year, either at the breweries I visited, the festivals I attended or in the cans and bottles I bought at my favorite liquor stores. Most are new or newish (or new to me, anyway).
